Hey Yo, I’m Sara Allen ~ the artist behind Laughing Lupin Studios.
I make colorful, botanical paintings for people who’ve lived through a few plot twists and decided joy deserves a second chance.
I live in Anchorage, Alaska, where the summers are short, the winters long, the blooms are loud, and the color theory is handled by the landscapes. Midnight teals, moss greens, fireweed pinks, and the alpenglow that stays so briefly it seems like magic — that’s my palette. Every color in the crayon box. It shows up as lupines, birch trees, glaciers, and whatever else refuses to be dull.
Art is my version of adult recess. Play that loosens things, brightens things, and interrupts the seriousness of the day. No matching-the-couch energy here, no “beige is sophisticated” philosophy, just vibrant color that hits the nervous system like a deep breath and a good belt-it-out song with strong air-guitar vibes.
In the last few years I made my own healing and blooming a non-negotiable. The life I’ve built here includes my husband Nick (dream architect, art sherpa & hype man), my dog Bobber the BobDog (studio supervisor, snack enthusiast), friends that have become my family, and a steady supply of candy. I’ll take tasting the rainbow and puckering sour over salty every single time.
If you’ve ever repaired yourself with therapy, playlists, or sheer stubbornness, welcome. This studio is for people who take their healing seriously but not themselves — people who’ve earned their joy the long way around.
My originals, prints, and small-batch paper goods have found homes throughout Alaska and beyond. They’re made for the folks who walk into a room, spot something bright, and think, “Ohhh, that one’s for me. Gimme!”
