A tall fireweed stem reaches upward through a wash of glowing yellow, orange, coral, and lime, its blossoms outlined in deep magenta and filled with shifting layers of turquoise, pink, gold, and green. Iridescent details catch the light across the petals, changing subtly as you move past the painting and giving this little stem an unexpected shimmer.
Around it, pale blue botanicals and fine feathery grasses rise through the warm background, while loose drips, lines, and layered marks give the piece the feeling of a summer meadow humming with color. There’s an openness to the composition. The fireweed has plenty of room to stretch upward, one bloom after another.
Sunlit Stems I is about reaching for the warmth while it’s here. About those long Alaska summer days when everything seems to grow almost faster than you can watch it. One of three sister pieces, it celebrates that brief, brilliant season when the light lingers and the wild things make the absolute most of it.
Sunlit Stems II, Sunlit Stems III (sisters to this piece)
Comes framed, ready to hang.
Created in my Anchorage home studio.
